Discussing mental health in the classroom
The issue of children’s mental health has become an area of real concern across the UK in recent years. Campaigners and research bodies are shining an increasingly critical spotlight on the ways that children are being manifestly let down by a broken system, with dozens of reports being published yearly highlighting the scale of the issue.
In Mental Mastery we look at the scope of the mental health crisis in the UK, unpack just how we got here and consider where the responsibilities lie in providing support and education.

Interview with Natasha Devon MBE
Interviewed for Mental Mastery is Natasha Devon MBE, a writer and activist who tours schools, colleges, universities and events throughout the world, delivering talks as well as conducting research on mental health, body image, gender and social equality. She campaigns both on and offline to make the world a fairer place.
On mental health in an everyday context, Natasha describes how, ““I like to refer to a matrix with mental illness on one axis and mental fitness on the other. A mental illness can be something that we inherit or something that develops over time but mental fitness is always something that we can work on. If you have a child who has no symptoms of mental illness but no mental fitness tools to deal with challenges like bullying, death, divorce or moving schools, then they are only a few steps away from entering into the vulnerable part of the axis. Mental fitness is about strengthening that part of the axis so that, regardless of mental illness, they can be in a safe place. Young people need to understand that it’s as important as eating your fruit and veg; it’s your mental health five a day.”
Guiding students through a shared meditation in the classroom on a daily basis can be beneficial for health.
